Keelung Islet

Keelung Islet is an easy-to-find islet outside Keelung City. One will see the islet from Keelung, the north coast or northeastern coast, which makes it an important landmark of Keelung. When you exit the highway at Daye Tunnel, you will see the islet formed by volcano, where there is no plain land but steep cliff. Depending on the weather and your location, the islet shows several beautiful scenes. When the day is clear, you will see a clear picture of this volcanic island; when the light is dim, the islet shows a mysterious charm.

Pinnacle (Huaping Islet)

Pinnacle (Huaping Islet) Looking like a vase, Pinnacle is a 0.0308-square-kilometer islet with a sharp tip. Formed by a small islet and many coral reefs, the islet, which is about 180m long and 80m wide and with an elevation of 51km, is 31.7216km away from Bitou Cape. Local fishermen call it the Kangjiao Yu (sedan islet), as it looks like a sedan from the northeast.

Pyroxene and andesite are the major rock types of the zigzag vase islet. The entire islet is coved with metallic volcanic debris which has turned purplish red (bordeaux), purple, green, brass (yellowish) and iron grey after oxidation. When sunlight sheds on, the reflection on the sea glitters like a kaleidoscope and corresponds to the Mianhua Islet (Crag)and Pengjia Islet (Agincourt). The abrasion cave on the fault in the southeast is the best evidence of the lifted abrasion platform.

Note
Kangjiao Yu to which fishermen refer to is Huaping Islet (Pinnacle); while Huayen Islet is Mianhua Islet (Crag). As the colloquial name and official name of these isles often confuse people, it is necessary to make a clarification here.

Pengjia Islet (Agincourt)

Pengjia islet is also named Dazhishan Islet or Cao Islet and the local fishermen often call it the big islet as it is the biggest one among the three outside islets of Keelung. Similar to Mianhua Islet and Huaping Islet, this plainer islet was also formed by volcano eruption. In the past, some fishermen stayed on the islet, but one can only see the lighthouse and meteorological observatory now.

Standing alone in the outer sea, Pengjia Islet has no natural barrier to withstand monsoon and typhoone; hence, the only plants that can survive on the islet are bushes. Accordingly, albatross used to breed here, but currently, one will only see some seabirds taking a break near the marine cave.

This islet remains a military control district; hence, citizen is not allowed to visit the islet. However, one might be able to see the islet by taking a fishing boat to sail around the islet.

Transportation Information & Directions:

Mianhua Islet (Crag)

Mianhua Islet (Crag) Located at 120.6” east and 25.29”north, the 0.12-square-kilometer Mianhua Islet is 42.9992km away from Bitou Cape. It is about 800km long from north to south and 530km wide from east to west, with an elevation of 61km. The well–developed abrasion platform in the southeast of the islet is still rising. The entire islet is a hanging cliff, and the only landing area on the islet is the small bay in the northwest corner on the west bank. As the coast is filled with rock reefs and there are strong north and northwest winds, it is difficult for ships to approach. According to literature, Mianhua Islet is called Kangjiao Islet, and also Jhongdao (Midway Islet). The English name Crag means rock cliff. It is called Mianhua Islet (cotton islet) because when migrating birds gathering here in summer and autumn and fly over the islet, it looks like flying cotton. There is a 25km–tall rock reef in the eastern waters of the islet. As it is erected in the middle of the sea like a big screen, it is called Pingfong Rock (screen rock).
